Shooting in Manila, an exposure of Óscar Fernández Orengo

Shooting in Manila, an exposure of Óscar Fernández Orengo

Over the years, at ALCINE we have had the privilege of witnessing the development of the best photographer of filmmakers in recent times: Óscar Fernández Orengo. From his two earlier series, an unfinished collection of portraits of Spanish filmmakers (entitled Through My Eyes and Filmmaker Portraits) to his portraits of actors for Everyday Scenes.

His work is not however limited to Spanish and Latin American cinema. Wherever he goes, Óscar seeks out, calls up and photographs dozens of filmmakers. His work, without assistants, without production, is the fruit of an indomitable passion for film, and is worth close attention. On two trips to Manila, one to present the exhibition Through My Eyes, he managed to photograph more than fifty filmmakers. And behind every image, there is a story worthy of film.

His portraits of these filmmakers, in contrast to his series on Spanish and Latin American directors, are an explosion of colour displaying the city of Manila in all its splendour, exoticism and chaos. What is kept from his earlier series is the atypical panoramic format, extremely unusual in portraits, which not only shows the expression and appearance of the sitter, but also their environment, neighbourhood, house… in short, the natural habitat of each filmmaker.

The images, which were included in a catalogue and exhibit in the city of Manila, are being published in Spain for the first time in this exhibit. Anyone walking around the exhibition who loves films, photography, and big cities, is in for a great surprise.
