Film and theatre hand in hand towards the same destination and joined by a single objective. The
Alcalá de Henares Cine Club will once again collaborate with the eighth showing of
‘Clásicos’ in Alcalá, one of the most important theatre festivals in the country, held from the 12th to the 29th of July on a range of stages around Alcalá de Henares. The cinema association will add its own section to the program of the event,
‘A vision of art’, under the
“Seventh Classic” banner. During the festival six feature films and three documentaries on diverse artistic disciplines will be screened.

The
Multicines Cisneros will be home to the special programming that will include
‘Molière’ (Laurent Tirard, 2007),
‘Fur’ (Steven Shainberg, 2006),
‘Copying Beethoven’ (Agnieszka Holland, 2006),
‘Becoming Jane’ (Julian Jarrold, 2007),
‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ (Peter Webber, 2003),
‘Goya’s Ghosts’ (Milos Forman, 2006) and three documentaries on the painter
José Hernández. This inclusion of the Cine Club in Clásicos in Alcalá will not change the standard programming, which in the first two weeks of June will keep up the double dose of cinema not subject to commercial demands with the screening of
‘Into the Wild’ (Sean Penn, 2007) and
‘The Band’s Visit’ (Eran Kolirin, 2007).
Two very different productions open the agenda of the Cine Club’s screenings in June.
Sean Penn directs
‘Into the Wild’, to be shown in the Cisneros Cinema on the
4th and 5th of June. The American actor returns to the director’s chair with the adaptation of a novel by
John Krakauer, the true story of the odyssey of a young idealist who leaves everything he has, a stable life and a promising future, to go in search of new experiences. The film was
nominated for two Oscars in the best supporting actor (Hal Holbrook) and film editing categories. It is not the first time Penn has taken on the director’s role, having already made other well received films such as “The Pledge” and “The Indian Runner”.
The next feature to be screened at the Cisneros cinema has a very different theme
(11th and 12th of June). ‘The Band’s Visit’ is an Israeli production directed by
Eran Kolirin that focuses on the journey made by a humble band of musicians from the Egyptian police around Israel.
Humour dotted with dramatic content that bridges the very broad cultural and social divides between Arabs and Israelis endows an unassuming script with great depth. An opportunity to view the debut of a very promising filmmaker in a film backed by its successful presence at dozens of international festivals.
‘A vision of art’
After the screenings of ‘Into the Wild’ and ‘The Band’s Visit’, the Cine Club will devote itself wholeheartedly to the program of
Clásicos en Alcalá, ‘A Vision of Art’; one of the most attractive parallel activities of the eighth theatre festival. The number of events in this cinema section has grown this year. There will be three days of screenings instead of two. The first round, Tuesday 17th, Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th will include
‘Molière’, ‘Copying Beethoven’ and
‘Fur’. The next round of the month (24th, 25th and 26th) will bring us
‘Goya’s Ghosts’, ‘Becoming Jane’, ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ and the
‘José Hernández in Short’ series. The times will be the same as always for the Cine Club, daily double sessions at 18:30 and 21:00. Members of the Cine Club get in free, as for all other sessions.
‘Molière’ depicts the life of the French dramatist when he is in his early twenties; a period comedy that will be screened on Tuesday the 17th (18:30) and Wednesday the 18th (21.00).
Ed Harris stars in
‘Copying Beethoven’, focussed on the famous composer’s relationship with Anne Holtz, a young woman who will end up working at his side. The film will be screened on Tuesday the 17th (21:00) and Thursday the 19th (18:30).
‘Fur’ examines the photographer Diane Airbus, portrayed by
Nicole Kidman, a woman who gained a deserved reputation as an original and innovative artist. An unsettling story shot by
Steven Shainberg, to be shown on Wednesday the 18th (18:30) and Thursday the 19th (21:00).
‘Goya’s Ghosts’ will open the last round of ‘A vision of Art’.
Javier Bardem and Natalie Portman lead the cast of this film directed by
Milos Forman, which takes us to the upheavals of Spain at the end of the XVIII century. It will be screened in two sessions: Tuesday the 24th (18:30) and Thursday the 26th (21:00).
‘Becoming Jane’ is a biopic of the young life of the author of ‘Pride and Prejudice’; portrayed on this occasion by
Anne Hathaway. Drama and romance join hands in this British production that can be enjoyed on Tuesday the 24th (21:00) and Thursday the 26th (18:30).
Between the two
‘José Hernández in short’ (18:30) and
‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ (21.00) will be shown just once on Wednesday 25th. The former brings together three documentaries on the figure of José Hernández, Spanish painter awarded the National Fine Arts Prize in 1981 and to whom Clásicos en Alcalá is devoting an exhibition in the
Capilla del Oidor to be inaugurated on the 6th of June. The latter, ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’, is a sensual reflection on painting in the XVII and a film with a star-studded cast including
Scarlett Johansson, Colin Firth, Tom Wilkinson and Cillian Murphy.
