Marwan was born in Cairo in 1977. He graduated from the film school in 1999 and in 2001, he directed 'Liilly'. His first feature film was 'The Yacubian Building', in 2006, based on the best-seller under the same name. The film participated in the Berlinale and won a lot of awards. His second long feature, 'Ibrahim Labyad' (2009), is considered to be one of the most shocking movies about the crime world in the Egyptian slums.
