The facts that Pedro Antonio de Alarcón narrated in the Book Checkbook, and that they pass in 1877, gather a piece of the history of Villa de Rota and his people. The protagonist of the story, a mayeto roteño, is an agriculturist small farm owner, without hardly water to cultivate her sandy earth so but with an ability to work that, after years and years to water with one jarrilla, its column undergoes an almost impossible encorvamiento. But of those tremendous necessities its great virtue is born: the talent, quality that the gaditano town characterizes and that the protagonist will have to worsen to demonstrate the robbery of the forty pumpkins of which she has been victim.
