Virgil Oldman (Geoffrey Rush) is managing director of a leading auction house. He's a man with his own individual style who regularly dyes his hair, never goes out without his finest leather gloves and tries to reveal as little as possible of his emotional world. In a secret hall inside the villa in which he lives alone, he has collected hundreds of masterful, priceless paintings from many different eras. He's succeeded in acquiring these paintings, all of them portraits of women, during his own auctions with the help of his old friend Billy. One day, Oldman receives a special assignment: a mysterious young woman (Sylvia Hoeks), who refuses to appear in person, asks him to sell her family's antiques. But Oldman isn't only interested in the classical painting, furniture and material on offer. He becomes increasingly fascinated by the mysterious incognito woman, who will only communicate with him from behind thick walls and heavy doors.

Giuseppe Tornatore
Born in Bagheria (Palermo), Giuseppe took interest in cinema directing some documentaries (with 'Le minoranze etniche in Sicilia', he won an award in Salerno's Festival) and working for television (he directed for the Rai, amongst other works, 'Diario di Guttuso'). After he collaborated with Giuseppe Ferrara in the direction of 'Cento giorni a Palermo' (1984), he shot two years later his first feature, 'Il Camorrista' (1986), a tough portrait of a Napolitan mafia's leader. In 1998, he made his masterpiece, 'Nuovo Cinema Paradiso', produced by Franco Cristaldi, winning an award in Cannes and the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. In 1990, he made the intimate and passionate film 'Stanno tutti bene', starring an aged Mastroianni for the occasion but without receiving the expected success. In 1994, Giuseppe directed the ambitious 'Una pura formalità' with Roman Polanski and Gérard Depardieu that narrates an ambiguous and disturbing story. One year later, he came back to Sicily to shoot 'L'uomo delle stelle' (1995). In 1998, he took a risk directing a colossal film, 'La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano' (1998), elocuent and beautiful adaptation of A. Baricco's brief monologue. After directing 'Malèna' in 2000, his penultimate film was 'La sconosciuta' (2006). In his career, he won several awards including an Oscar and a Golden Globe.
