Aitziber Olaskoaga

Aitziber Olaskoaga was born in the Basque Country (Spain) in 1980. She moves to Barcelona to study filmmaking at the ESCAC, where she majors in cinematography. Once she finishes her studies, she works for a short period of time as a second camera assistant in publicity and other shootings. Not convinced by the industry’s work dynamics and its pyramidal structures, she wanders through jobs that often have little to do with cinema and which she documents with her camera. In 2011, she participates in the production and execution of a collaborative film, Faux Guide (Fake Guide), together with the visual artists Red Caballo and a group of youngsters from Fès, Morocco. Here, she discovers that it’s possible to carry out audiovisual projects based on non-conventional structures. In 2012 she moves to Amsterdam through a scholarship. A few months later, she starts recording Smiling on the phone in the city. The film travels to Los Angeles in 2015, where she also lands with a scholarship, and where the audio postproduction is carried out to complete the film.
