Fabio Guglielmelli
I was born and grew up in Naples, Italy. I became interested in cinema at a young age and each movie I watched made me fall more and more in love with this art.
However, I studied engineering at university. In Naples, a city of high unemployment, being involved in cinema was seen as not creating much of a future for yourself. In my spare time at university, I began researching diligently the art of cinema via books and the internet and this further fuelled my passion. Anyhow, I never found the courage to dump “normal life” and a secure job, to follow my passion.
I decided to come here, to Ireland, as it seemed to be full of opportunities- to study film, to learn english and to see more of life. During the summer of 2006 I completed the “Film Foundation” course to FilmBase Dublin, to find out more about filmmaking. After that course I was hooked. I went on to do two further courses- the“Camera and Lighting” and “Documentary” courses. In the last two years I have worked as a camera operator for two low budget short movies, “Everything and Nothing” and “A Dirty War”, the last one , in which I was first Assistant Director as well, was shown as part of the last Kerry film festival. Furthermore, I also completed a documentary (Capoeira) , working as both the director and cameraman. In the previous months, I wrote and directed my first short movie “Hard Luck”, a story of two friends playing russian roulette. I also worked as DOP in another low budget short called “Bau Bau Uhm”.
I admire many different directors from Abbas Kiarostami, to Alfred Hitchcock to David Lynch, for their ability to portray human feelings and emotions through different techniques, as well as making you empathise with the characters. I believe that cinema is the most complete art, an art that can move us more than any other.
It was finally here in Ireland that I found the courage to dedicate my life to film production, to follow my passion. I don’t know what the future holds, but I know that I am highly addicted to the set...the feeling I get there is a great emotion I get nowhere else.
