In conjunction with this millennial year, Zero Screen has selected a progressive portrait of the situation of the first independent filmmakers, from the year’s best independent cinema. Not so young anymore at around thirty years old and engaged in struggles in relation to their youthful dreams, whether it be making a film, staying on the rap scene, living as an actress in the US or just remaining relevant to others or to oneself, or just avoiding literally disappearing. Having being hit hard by the crisis and struggling to defeat to the material demands and aspirations of adult life, we present four feature films produced on the margins of the industry and the conventional circuits, which blend genres and styles, moving from documentary to psychological horror, and introducing a new generation of directors worth keeping a close eye on.
And to go with these four feature films, two extra sessions not in competition, as part of Quién lo impide -Who’s to stop us-. This very special cinema project aims to shine a spotlight on today’s young adolescents, led by Jonás Trueba and Los ilusos films. It transcends traditional film formats and normal distribution channels, and seeks to grow and branch into various frameworks for action. An immersive film experience which presents a range of filmed material edited over a period of months. Quién lo impide is a call to transform the perception we have of adolescence and young people, and also a manner of understanding cinematographic creation: freer and more open, carried out with limited resources and a small team of people, over time with perseverance and attitude.
